Water town-Qi Bao

There is a water town of Qi Bao on the edge of Shanghai. The town was first constructed by the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1126) and prospered as a business center during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. It is very old with a history spanning over 1000 years (is the only part of Shanghai with a history spanning this long).

Overall it was interesting to see something distinctively "Chinese," especially during the Spring Festival. Shanghai is a relatively new city so you don't see old style buildings and temples very often. For a couple of hours it was like I was back in "Old" China again!

Qi Bao is in its display of historical temples, shops, tea houses, and restaurants. It is considerably less commercial however as there were no Burger Kings, McDonalds, or Starbucks. In that sense, it seemed more authentic and retained a kind of old feel to it. The worse thing about Qi Bao was that it was incredibly crowded. I could hardly move. I'm not sure if this was because it is Spring Festival right now, though my guidebook did mention it is quite frequently very crowded. I noticed there were considerably less Westerners there than Chengheung Temple. In fact I only saw about 4 amongst the thousands of people there.

Jiuzhaigou deity pond

Introduction

Jiuzhaigou deity pond is the place of fairy's bath; the total area is approximately 300,000 hectare, 130 kilometers from Jiuzhaigou County.

Scenic area ticket: 398 Yuan (contain 45 kilometers sightseeing fares, to enter scenic area the storage battery fare, a meal expense, tour guide fee as well as insurance and so on.)

Position: Located at south Mt. Minshan sierra section in northeast of Sichuan

Transportation: It takes 45 minutes from Chengdu to Jiuhuang airport. Then hire bus (minibus or taxi) to Jiuzhaigou deity pond about 1 hour, 40 Yuan.

Hotel: After deity pond tour, may return to Jiuzhaigou for lodging. The resort named Jiuzhai heaven international conference resort center, which consists of a five-star hotel, an ultra five-star hotel, the ancient Qiang pagoda and the hot spring center.

Travel guide

The deity pond scenic area limits the population to enter at present, for the purpose of making an excellent ecology space for the tourist; every day only accepts 2000 tourists. Therefore the tourist does not need to worry that it is fully occupied like other scenic spots. The scenic area also provides the free fruit, coffee and so on for the tourist.

Three Gorges

The scenery of the Gorges was really beautiful and the early morning mist gave the place an eerie but not altogether unpleasant feel.

The first of the three Yangzi Gorges is known as the Qutang Gorge, which, at 8 kilometers long, is the smallest and shortest of the Three Gorges, but contains the fastest water. On the north bank are remains of Warring States Period peoples who buried their dead in coffins set in crevices in high caves along the riverside cliffs. Nine coffins discovered in such crevices include bronze swords and armor from the period. The cliff sides include square holes bored into the rock to hold support timbers for plank roads and scaffolds.

Wu Gorge (Wu Xia) is about 40 km long, with sheer, narrow cliffs on either side rising up to 900 m above the water and sometimes seeming to close over approaching boats. A nearby rock inscription is attributed to Zhuge Liang of the Three Kingdoms period, and the Kong Ming tablet, a large inscribed rock slab at the foot of the Peak of the Immortals. A side trip leads to the Three Little Gorges (Xiao Sanxia) along the Daning River for 33 km, passing the Dragon Gate Gorge and remains of a Qing dynasty road cut into the cliffs.

Xiling Gorge is the longest and deepest of the three at 80 km, with cliffs that rise as high as 4,000 feet. It begins at the town of Zigui, known as the birthplace of the poet Qu Yuan of the late Warring States period (3rd century BC), whose suicide is commemorated by dragon-boat races throughout southern China. In former times this was the most dangerous gorge, negotiated only with arduous efforts by trackers on shore.

The religious cliff sculptures of Dazu and Baodingshan and the Three Gorges scenic region of the Yangzi River are all nearby, making Chongqing an important center for tourism despite the scarcity of notable sights within the city proper.
