General information of Australia

It is very easy to change money in Australia. Banks and exchange bureaus often charge commissions, but the rates will be higher than in airport, hotel and the smaller money exchange shops. It’s sensible to make sure you have Australia currency when left.

There are six states and two territories in Australia. New south Wales’s tourist regions famously include Sydney and surrounds, where urban icons such as the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge are within striking distance of the blue Mountains and the Hunter Valley vineyards. Farther north, Queensland has Cairns, the focus of activity for Great Barrier Reef tours, but also the Gold and Sunshine coasts, with world-class beaches. Island-hopping and yacht cruising are a good way to see the Whitsundays, Remote Darwin and the tropical Top End have their own scenic spots. Kakadu National Park is a world Heritage Site, while Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park (Ayers Rock and the Olgas) and the MacDonnell Ranges epitomize the arid Red Centre. Just as remote are Broome and the Kimberley’s in the north of Western Australia: discover the romance of pearling days and rugged mountain scenery. Busier is Perth, the commercial heart of southeast of Western Australia. Adelaide and the Barossa Valley vineyards have a European charm, though South Australia’s wines are distinctly Australian. Melbourne is cosmopolitan and the rest of Victoria has mountains, desert and the fertile coast. Few international visitors see Tasmania, but its scenery is on a grand scale.
